You've Got a Friend (Carole King Cover)

from Slowburn by Reuben Walton

about

A good song that I was inspired to cover after having heard the children at North Falmouth Elementary sing it (we were touring to different jobs to "shadow" them, and naturally the closest thing for me was a music teacher's job) and almost breaking down in tears right then and there--I wasn't even hungover, it was just that moment. That and also the fact that this was in May 2009 and it was after I had completed my IB exams and I was very close to the ending of my senior year of high school, which, despite all my inner rage, angst and resentment towards all the hipsters who refused to accept me into their exclusive clique, was nonetheless a naturally bittersweet moment of transition. I am a lover of transcendentally beautiful songs like this one with a universal message relating to our connected humanity. It's actually quite liberating to indulge in it when one is surrounded by people who's closest equivalent is Bon Iver (Not throwing any shade, For Emma, Forever Ago is an amazing record). Luckily, with all of the music out there, I never have to be in withdrawal from these type of songs when I need to feel that kind of inspirational, uplifting, emotionally validating moment. Other examples of songs like this are "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and the track that precedes this one on this album, "What a Wonderful World".

lyrics

When you're down and troubled
And you need some loving care
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend

If the sky above you should turn dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind should begin to blow
Keep your head together
And call my name out loud
Soon you'll hear me knocking at your door
You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am I'll come running to see you again Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there, yes I will
You've got a friend

Now ain't it good to know that you've got a friend
When people can be so cold
They'll hurt you, yes, and desert you
They'll take your soul if you let them
Oh, but don't you let them

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am I'll come running to see you again Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there, yes I will
You've got a friend
