I had always loved the epic sadness of this aria ever since I first heard it, especially since it really captures compositionally how intense and cathartic feeling that emotion can be for one experiencing it. The auto-tune is there because I thought it sounded cool, because it commands maximum attention to that iconic and haunting melody, and because the use of the auto-tune also brings a certain level of coldness to an already melancholy piece. Also, the fact that the vocal and piano were recorded together lends an eery wavery, watery quality to the piano accompaniment, as the pitch correction software is trying to make sense of that part of the recording as well. The recording of my voice and piano is from the 2008-2009 academic year at Sturgis Charter Public School in Hyannis, MA. Laurie Davis, my third high school music teacher, is playing the piano accompaniment.
