City's Lonely

from City's Lonely - Single by Reuben Walton

about

I wrote this song in November of 2020 living in Hollywood in my apartment feeling quite isolated and missing my ex. The lyrics are mostly true to life. Also the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to LA being very different from previous years and not as fun. I was using Ableton when I made the initial demo of this song and I feel that me being new to using it contributed to making a record with a different type of vibe. I.e. more potential for happy accidents and little quirks that can direct my creative flow much like big rocks directing the flow of water in a stream. Anyway, hope you like the song. I made sure to do my vocal take editing myself so I got it sounding the way I felt was best, and only then did I bring it to co-produce the song with Matteo Cerescioli, a great producer and mixing engineer I found on SoundBetter who was immensely helpful. The second verse contains a lyrical and melodic interpolation of "Leave This City" by The Sundays, off of their 1997 album Static & Silence.

lyrics

Tequila shots
On Venice Beach
Summer ‘19
just you and me
You wanted forever
I had trepidation
Now you’re incarcerated and it’s

So unfair
How it had to be
You wanted me in your family
still have all your letters
they’re crumpled but I’ll keep ‘em
No I ain’t got a reason

But the city’s lonely
It’s borderline unholy
That you can’t be
Right here with me
You were my only homie
But our lives unfolded
So differently

We went back and forth
Like a pendulum
Like a light switch
It was off and on
I would try to ghost you
Then you would come to find me
Now in 2020
It’s gone forever, the stairs we used to go
The vibe is different,
The world has lost control
Talked to your mom she said they took you away
Mass hysteria, the color has all drained

and the city’s lonely
It’s borderline unholy
That you can’t be
Right here with me
You were my only homie
But our lives unfolded
So differently

At the edge of another winter
I find myself missing
my Silver Lake boy
Silver Lake boy
