Can't Go Back Now Blues (feat. Brian McGravey)

from Odds and Ends by Reuben Walton

/

about

I wanted to make a twelve-bar blues song. It's in C Major. So I tried my hand at this longstanding musical convention, and I was pretty pleased with the results. My friend Brian McGravey chipped in with a vibes keyboard solo. I wanted it to sound like a smoky blues bar. The blues melody I sang for the first verse was inspired by and is largely a note-for-note copy of part of the melody from Billie Holiday's "Billie's Blues". In addition to background vocals, I also included some adlibbed scatting syllables. I liked using the slap-back echo effect.

lyrics

Reuben Walton: (vocalizing)
I've made my bed so in it I'll lay
I've made my bed so in it I'll lay
Should've resisted, 'n' now it's too damn late

Lyin' awake at five in the morning, mind full o' trouble
Lyin' awake, five in the morning, mind full o' trouble
'round eleven-thirty that day I found out just how right I was
