Tell Me, Heartbreaker (Mash-Up)

about

The instrumental used in this song is the instrumental to Bobby Valentino's song "Tell Me" which was a minor hit in 2005. I was driving one day after leaving the gym and it came on on my iPod, and for whatever reason, I started humming the infectious melody of the first verse of "Heartbreaker (feat. Jay Z)" to see what it would sound like over it. This melody had been in my head because it's so catchy. I thought it sounded cool over this instrumental so I thought of making a mash-up of the two songs. I think using this instrumental lends a darker, more seductive and melancholy quality to the song, kind of like "Hearbreaker (feat. Jay Z)" meets "The Roof (Back in Time)", another song by her, which incidentally I later ended up also covering. However, I couldn't find the "Heartbreaker (feat. Jay Z)" acapella that I would need to make the mash-up. Therefore, not to be deterred, I decided to record my own performance of "Heartbreaker (feat. Jay Z)" over this instrumental, complete with background ad-lib vocals and harmonization. I got the opening line slightly wrong, singing "Boy you look so good" instead of "Boy your love's so good". I didn't remember the entirety of Jay Z's verse so I made my own freestyled rapped verse for that part, which contains a lyrical interpolation from Lil' Kim's song "The Jump Off (feat. Mr. Cheeks)" off of her 2003 album La Bella Mafia with the line "leave in somebody's Ferrari".

lyrics

Boy you look so good
I don't wanna let go
And although I should
I can't leave you alone
Cause you're so disarming
I'm caught up in the midst of you
And I cannot resist at all
Boy if I do
The things you wanna to
The way I used to do
Could you love me baby
You leave me feelin used
Cause you go and break my heart

Heartbreaker you've got the best of me
But I just keep on comin' back incessantly
Oh why did you have to run your game on me
I should have known right from the start
You'd go and break my heart
(Gimme your love, gimme your love)
(Gimme your love, gimme your love)

It's a shame to be
So euphoric and weak
When you smile at me
And you tell me things
That you know persuade me
To relinquish my love to you
But I cannot resist
At all
Boy if I do
The things you wanna to
The way I used to do
Would you love me baby
You leave me feelin used
Cause you go and break my heart

She wanna...
She wanna...
Yo, I won't say it again/
'Cause I already know I'm playin' the game/
And I'm playin' to win/
Back through the project yard where I was to play/
But damn that was fuckin' fifteen years ago, mane/
can't go back in time as much as I wish I could/
but the bottom line is everything happens for a reason/
it's the season/
'cause I make it: good (sung)
'cause I make him feel: good
and I know I'm: good
and I'm rollin' up the: good
So what you want?/
got it all right here, right in the back/
roll up the sticky and call it a night/
'cause I'm straight fuckin' wildin' out/
it's Thirsty Thursday and you know I'm partyin' out/
damn, have a night out on the town/
the streets of Lowell packed and I'm jammin' the gown/
damn, like the 1800's but damn/
I'm feelin' some of that stuff like man/
damn, I'm gettin' ready to leave in somebody's Ferrari/
But I'm tryna get mad fuckin' Maseratis/
So I'ma lay back low while ya clean the potty like: good
I'm out.
2010, y'all. This is how we do it in the 978/
you either ride or you ain't/
roll it up and pass it around/
yo, yo, yo, yo, (fade to background)
