Karen Peris is the lead singer of my favorite band, The Innocence Mission. I sampled two of their songs in this piece, "O Lord of Light", off of their 2000 album of hymns entitled Christ Is My Hope, and "No Storms Come", off of their 2003 album Befriended. I previously used an a capella of her singing the lullaby "Bye-Lo" off of their 2004 lullabies album Now the Day Is Over, in a piece I made in 2008. The lyrics from the portion of the piece that samples "No Storms Come" originated in a Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889) poem entitled "Heaven--Haven: A Nun Takes The Veil", from the book "Lyra Sacra: A Book of Religious Verse", published in 1895. That poem has been set to music by numerous composers such as Samuel Barber. The production I contributed in this one has rhythms which are almost constantly changing in some way, moving in and out of arrhythmia. The horn line repeats and changes as well, eventually being whittled down to a single note stab.
lyrics
In lowliness He came on Earth, to rescue us from Satan's snares, o wondrous love that healed our wounds, by taking on our mortal cares. To God the Father and the Son, for ages of eternal day, together with the Spirit be, all glory, honor, might and praise. Till, oh, I have asked to be. I have desired to go, oh I have asked to go, where a few lilies bloom, to fields where flies no sharp and sided hail, and springs not fail, and springs not fail. And I have asked to be, oh I have asked to be, out of the swing of the sea, where the green swell is in the havens dumb, and no storms come, and no storm come
